Show James KL Walker Memorial Services Set for Thurs., April 7 Old Grads, foi-mer students and under-graduates of Pleasant Gove High School will mingle with local citizens at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 7 to honor one of Utah's outstanding' pioneer td- ucators, James H. Walker. The event is scheduled for the beautiful beau-tiful and spacious auditorium of the new Senior High School. Known and admired as the "Father of Pleasant Grove High School," Mr. Walker devoted his life to the cause of education, as teacher, principal, superintendent superin-tendent and salesman of books in the educational field. His active campaign for a high school in Pleasant Grove began in 1905, when with no cash available, avail-able, he established a ninth grade taught on a part-time basis by him and other Central School teachers. tea-chers. His efforts in this struggle for secondary education culminated culmin-ated in this spring of 1912 when the first full-fledged, four-year high school class was graduated. He continued on as principal of the local high school until the spring of 1912, when he became superintendent of Alpine School District schools. He resigned as superintendent in. the summer of 1916 to become western states representative of the McMillan Co., publishers of books for schools and colleges. The last paragraph of his life's history, written for the souvenir booklet of the April 7 Memorial Services, reads as follows: "From us, the pioneer students of Pleasant Grove High School, comes this reminder to all who have enjoyed its advantages and blessings, that Pleasant Grove and especially Pleasant Grove High School owe a debt of gratitude grat-itude to our own great educator, James H. Walker." |
