Commenting on the showing for the first month of the year, Earl C. Sams, president of the J. C. Penney Co. said, "While a certain very definite defi-nite part of the gain shown in the sales of the company for January may be credited to the fact that we have opened a number of new stores during the past twelve months, the percentage gain made by the older stores accounted for one third of the gross gain for the month. "The Increased volume of sales made by our organization was achieved achiev-ed in spite of the generally backward back-ward "weather conditions which prevailed pre-vailed in nearly all parts of the country coun-try and which were especially severe in the South." Only one store in Utah showed a loss while 28 showed gains. The local store had the largest gain of any store in the state. |
