Show I Ivie selected for 'People to People' tour of Soviet Union and China i ii i I Ron Ivie, Park City's chief building official, has been selected by the Eisenhower Foundation to participate in a "People to People" delegation to the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China. He will be one of 15 U.S. building inspection officials to make the tour in conjunction with the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO). The "People to People" program was established to promote understanding between cultures. The program is geared to facilitate a "sharing of ideas," Ivie said. "We'll be trying to learn from them and we'll also try to contribute whatever we can" he said. The tour is scheduled to depart from New York on Aug. 10, 1985 and return to San Francisco on Aug. 31. "I understand it's one of the best experiences you can have," Ivie said. "I was quite shocked to be asked." Ivie has served on ICBO's National Committee. He has been active in the organization for 20 years. Mayor Jack Green and the Park City Council voted unanimously to fund the trip. City Manager Arlene Loble said the gesture by the council was in "appreciation for outstanding performance per-formance in the public sector." She explained that unfortunately, in the public sector, outstanding performance perfor-mance is usually rewarded no more than medicore performances. Since ROIl Ivie photo by Christopher Smart the trip to Russia and China are job related, it's a "special" way for the city to reward Ivie for an "excellent job," Loble said. Loble explained that Ivie has brought to the Park City Building Department the qualities of "order, fairness, predictability and quality control." Before Ivie's arrival, there was no consistency in assessment of building fees or building inspection, Loble said. "If a builder thinks the only way he can make a project work is to cut corners, he need not apply here, Loble said of Park City, its building codes and the way they are enforced by Ivie. There is a great deal of pressure on Building Department employees, Loble noted, because for building contractors who need inspections "time is money." She added that under Ivie, Building Department employees "hustle all day long." "Ron Ivie is the ideal public servant and its high time somebody said so," Loble said. |
