Show r Miner girls scalped savagely by Braves u v till It The strength of Natalie Bleyl's rebounding was one of the few bright spots for Park City. by Randy Ilanskat It was a scene resembling Custer's last stand, although this was only the first stand of this year's Park City High School girls' basketball schedule. The North Summit Braves, looking every bit like Apaches of old, swarmed around, over, and through the Miners, working up to a final score of 95-19 Dec. 13 in Miner Gym. Before you get physically sick at the thought of such a stomping, take note that the Braves won the 1A state title last season, crushing the opposition in the final game of the state playoffs by the score of 118-14. The story of the game was told by the end of the first quarter, when the score stood at 35-0. Multiply that by four and you get a final game score of 140-0. The sparse Miner crowd didn't doubt that such a shutout was possible, either, as the Braves trampled the Park City squad. The key to the domination was a full court press employed by North Summit. Miner Coach Bob Burns said North Summit pushed the press all the way to the front half of the court, 3 forcing the Miners to try long ; baseball passes to get the ball in bounds. The problem was that the Park City girls don't have the strength to chuck a half-court pass, he said. Without that, inbounding the ball successfully was a rare occasion for Park City. The few times that Park City did put the ball in play without being intercepted, Miner dribblers had trouble negotiating through the Brave defense. Park City was totally dominated. Burns said the game pointed out the situation he is faced with year after year on the girls' team. He said many of the junior varsity girls had never watched a basketball game , before last Thursday, much less ' played one. The varsity isn't much more experienced, he said. On the other side of the court, however, many of the North Summit team members have played basketball since the third or fourth grade in local leagues. High scorer for Park City was g Wendy Brown with 13 points. Cheryl Judd of North Summit had 26. The next game for Park City is today at Grantsville. The varsity ' game begins at 7 p.m., with the j.v. 1 preceding at 5:45 p.m. a Summit conference. Miner Coach Bob Burns plots strategy, but Brittany Brown looks nervous chewing a fingernail. |
