Unless otherwise noted, events listed below will take place in Salt Lake DANCE -See the magic of Ballet West's "Nutcracker," playing at the Capitol Theatre, 50 West Second South. It plays Dec. 20 and 21 at 7 p.m., Dec. 22 at 2 and 7 p.m., Dec. 24 at noon and Dec. 26 at 2 and 7 p.m. MOVIES -On Dec. 21, Clifton Webb stars in "Cheaper by the Dozen" as a stern but lovable father of a brood of twelve as the Salt Lake Library continues its December Webb Festival. Showings are Friday at 2 p.m. (for 25 cents) and 7 p.m. (for 50 cents). The library is at 209 East 500 South. At the Blue Mouse: "The Ruling Class" shows mad aristocrat Peter O'Toole adopting such identities as Jack the Ripper and Jesus Christ; "Hair," directed in 1979 by Milos Forman, looks back at the Sixties with Treat Williams and Beverly D'Angelo; and "Meetings With Remarkable Men," from the book by Gurdjieff, details the author's search for life's meaning. The Mouse is at 260 East 100 South. The Utah Media Center presents two classic fantasies. In "Jason and the Argonaut," special-effects wizard Rav Harryhausen put on his best display of giant gods, sword-fighting skeletons and slithery beasts. It plays on Dec. 21 (7:30 p.m.) Dec. z2 (2:30 and 7:30 p.m.) and Dec. 23 (7:30p.m.). The co-feature, "The Incredible Shrinking Man," stars Grant Williams as a man who is exposed to a radioactive cloud. The mood here ranges from the philosophical to the thrilling (as the tiny man fights a spider in his basement. It plays Dec. 21 at 9: 30 p.m. and Dec. 22-23 22-23 at 5:30 and 9:30 p.m. For further information call 534-1158. The films are shown in the auditorium of the Salt Lake Art Center, 20 West South Temple. General admission is $2.50 for one film, or $3.50 for the double feature. MUSIC Connie Francis plays the Celebrity Showroom, 139 East South Temple, Dec. 20-22. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir presents a free Christmas concert on Dec. 21 and 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Salt Lake Tabernacle. A new entertainment center, Stars, is opening in Sandy with two special shows from The Tubes. The band plays Dec. 21-22 at 8 p.m. Stars is located at 90th South and 550 West. Tickets are available at Datatix outlets, Tapehead and Special Events Center. THEATRE Playwright Christopher Durang works over Catholic education with "Sister Mary Ignatius Explains it All For You." The play runs Thursday-Saturday at 8 p.m., with another Saturday show at 10: 15 p.m. Tickets are $8.50. It is presented by the Salt Lake Acting Company at 168 West Fifth North. Promised Valley Playhouse, 132 South State, features Victor Herbert's "Babes in Toyland" through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. A Dec. 24 matinee is at 2 p.m. "84 Charing Cross Road" is a dramatization of a lone correspondence between an American authorit (Margaret Crowell) and an English bookstore owner (Gene Pack). It plays Thursday-Saturday through Dec. 22 ( 8 p.m . ) at Theater 139, 138 South Second East. Utah's foremost Dickens interpreter, Michael Bennett, presents a reading of "Christmas Carol" on Dec. 21 and 22 at the Art Barn, 54 Finch Lane. Performances are at 8 p.m. For ticket information call 581-9787. ETCETERA The annual Torchlight Parade takes place at the Park City Ski Area at dusk on Christmas Eve. Snowbird hosts another torch parade, at dusk, followed by a candle-lighting service. Finally, Santa Claus will rest from his labors by appearing all Christmas dav at the ski area. IP -The Kimball Art Center features batik artist Amos Amit in an exhibit through Jan. 3 KAC also features its Christmas Boutique in the Lower Gallery this month. A collection of French and Polish movie posters, owned by Marilyn Nelson of Park City's Imagio, is on display at the Salt Lake Art Center through Jan. 15. "Christmas on Ice" at Triad's new outdoor rink features Santa Claus, elves and local figure skaters all on ice. It will be performed Dec. 21-22 and 24 at 2 p.m. and Dec. 23 at 7 p.m., for free. -The Utah Jazz play Detroit on Dec. 20, Dallas on Dec. 22, Kansas City on Dec. 26. The games take place at the Salt Palace, 7:30 p.m. In other hoop action, the University of Utah plays Nevada-Reno on Dec. 20, 7:35 p.m., at the Special Events Center. L J |
