Forster's classic story of love and social struggle in 1928 India. Premiere to benefit U.S. Film Festival "Passage to India," the first film in 14 years from director David Lean, will be featured at a gala Utah premiere Dec. 29 to raise funds for the U.S. Film Festival. The film will be shown at 7 p.m. in both houses of the Utah Theatre in Salt Lake. It will be followed by a dinner-dance at the Salt Lake Art Center with guest Robert Redford. The event is also held in conjunction with an exhibit of French and Polish movie posters at the center. A silent auction will sell posters autographed by Redford, with proceeds going to the festival. "Passage to India," based on the classic E.M. Forster novel, stars Judy Davis (of the Australian film "My Brilliant Career") as a young woman caught between the allure of the exotic Indian lifestyle and her own strict unbringing. . The cast also includes Dame Peggy Ashcroft, Victor Banerjee, James Fox and Sir Alec Guinness, whose work with director Lean goes back nearly 40 years to "Great Expectations" in 1946. Lean was also the writer for "Passage." His previous work includes "Oliver Twist," "Bridge on the River Kwai," "Lawrence of Arabia, "Doctor Zhivago," and "Ryan's Daughter."
