Show Special Olympics selects new coordinators to raise funds for 1985 international winter games ' "v - :. - by Teri Gomes Two new coordinators have been named to helo raise funds for the upcoming 1985 International Winter Special Olympics. The pair are Claudia Flandro Ward and James F. Bailey, they replace Anne Burnett who left the Special Olympics offices in mid-November. "I'm excited about the opportunity opportun-ity Utah, and especially Park City has to show, in both our resources and our caring people," said Bailey. "I'm committed to trying to make a difference for mentally retarded people. This is one way I can help." Bailey, has served as a Baptist minister in Texas and with the Bexar County mental health and mentally retarded center In addition he worked from 1974-1978 with the Arizona state drug and alcohol and mental health division. "People the world over are coming here for these games," said Ward, "and I think that's exciting for Park City and Salt Lake." Ward has for the past seven years been the assistant director of the Utah Opera Company. She says she began at the ground floor of the Opera Company and was instrumental instrumen-tal in it's present growth to a $1 million organization. She has taught school from elementary to college levels. "I'm excited to be working for a company that is away from the arts ., photo by Terl Gomel Claudia Flandro Ward and James F. Bailey. for a change," said Ward. "This certainly is a worthy cause." A variety of fund raising events are planned in upcoming months from tennis tournaments to running races. Plans are now being finalized for a major benefit concert and a "taste" of the private clubs of Park City for the International Games. Ward also emphasized there are any number of sponsorship programs pro-grams still available. "People can donate services and products as well as cash," said Ward. "And we can always use volunteers, there are really so many ways to be a part of the Games." Fund raising eitorts were originally original-ly targeted at $ 1 .7 million. The group now needs to raise the remaining $500,000 of that money before the March Games.
