Show Governor's small business conference set for Friday The Biannual Governor's Small Business Conference will be held at the Hotel Utah Friday, Oct. 26. The Governor's Advisory Council on Small Business is sponsoring the event. The council is a 32-member alliance of small business owners appointed by the Governor. The conference will feature Governor Scott Matheson as the luncheon speaker and Rod Brady, President of Weber State College, as the keynote speaker. Highlighting the event will be a debated between gubernatorial candidates scheduled for 2 p.m. Participants will have the opportunity to ask the candidates questions relating to small business. The conference is open to everyone ranchers, farmers, retailers, retail-ers, wholesalers, manufacturers, service people, and concerned citizens. The purpose is to identify small business concerns in the areas of taxation and capital formation. Once these issues are identified, they are then drafted for legislation. The process really does work," says Gordon Bird, chairman of the advisory council. "Six bills were passed in favor of small business as a result of the 1982 State Small Business Conference." Taxation issues this year include the sales and use tax on equipment for modernation, the corporate franchise tax, the unitary tax for multinational corporations, and the personal property tax on personal equipment. The chief capital formation forma-tion issue will be the creation of a statewide finance authority for the provision of direct loans, state venture captial funds, and industrial revenue bond guarantees for small businesses. Other sponsoring organizations include the Division of Economic Development, the Salt Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, the National Federation of Independent Business, the U.S. Small Business Administration, Administra-tion, and the Utah Council of Small Business.
