Show Youth soccer heads for the hills by Dave Hanscom P.C. Soccer Commissioner The Park City youth soccer soc-cer teams moved to the mountains this week, with five games scheduled at the three soccer fields here in town. The eight teams have been playing in Salt Lake for the past three weeks in hopes that the weather would cooperate co-operate by the first of May and provide dry fields and warm weather. The teams were blessed with good field conditions, but the snow squalls caused a few problems for some of the games. At the high school field, Hank Verrone's 11- and 12-year-old boys had just finished wrapping up their fourth straight victory when the snow started. They beat a Cottonwood team 4-0. This is the team selling chances for a trip to Hawaii to help finance a trip of their own to that island to play in a tournament in July (see separate story). Kathy Benner's 13- and 14-year-old boys are also doing extremely well this spring. Their game against a Sandy team at the hih school ended end-ed in a 1-1 tie in a total white-out just before noon. This team is also trying to defray expenses for a sum mer tournament. They're selling candy and expect to head for California in June (see separate story). Park City's two 9- and 10-year-old teams played at the city park. Both of these teams are coed and have had mixed results in the Salt Lake games. Bob Lewis's team managed a 3-1 victory over Hank Louis's team this week. There are also two coed teams in the 7- and 8-year-old group. Terry Christiansen's team shut out Tony Mitchell's 2-0 on Saturday Satur-day at Parley's Park Elementary School in the 9 a.m. game. Paul Kalkbrenner did not fare so well with his 5- and 6-year-olds, who were scheduled sched-uled to play at Parley's Park at 10 a.m. The snow came down so hard that the Salt Lake team finally gave up and went home without a game. The other Park City team is Terry Richardson's 11-and 11-and 12-year-old girls, who drew a bye this week. They will be playing along with all of our other teams, this coming com-ing Saturday, weather permitting. per-mitting. There will be games all morning at the three fields, so come on out and support Park City's kids. |
