Park City Ski Area season breaks records set last year by Randy Hanskat And you thought last year was good. This ski season for the Park City Ski Area was the best on record (mirroring the reports from the two other area resorts), according to Phil Jones, president of Utah's largest ski area. Jones didn't give specific figures, saying only that the totals were slightly above those of the '82 '83 season, but gave credit to the draw of Deer Valley and ParkWest, good early snow, and increased in-creased publicity about Utah in general and Park City in particular. Jones also said he ing on developing a new access to the top of the mountain, Jones said. The first new lift in that plan will be installed this summer, a triple chair to service the Blueslip Bowl area. Jones said the chair (as yet unnamed) will run from the east end of the Walker Webster mine up to the north side rim of Blueslip Bowl, 200 feet from the water tower at the top of the Thaynes chair. Jones said the new lift will open up both expert and high intermediate terrain. A few expert runs will be cut through the evergreens in to Blueslip, while intermediate runs will be cut through the aspen to the north side of the bowl. A "Bonanza-like" access road will be cut from the top of Belmont down to the WalkerWebster base, Jones said. Of course, access can also be gained by the new runs, or through Blueslip. "The purpose of the new lift is twofold," Jones said. "First to open up new terrain, second to provide new access to the top of the mountain." That new access started with conversion of the Payday chair from a double to a triple in 1981. The new chair is the second step. The installation of the Town Lift next summer will be the third step, followed by proposed "lifts up into the McConkey's Bowl area. Eventually skiers will be able to get to the top of the mountain on this series of lifts, thereby avoiding the crowds of the Prospector area, Jones said. tnougnt much ot the increase was due to 'word-of-mouth advertising from pleased customers who came to Park City last year.
