Show Six Miners to go to state track meet by Randy Hanskat Last Friday at Utah State University in the Region 11 track meet the Park City High School contingent didn't do so well as a team. But six individuals were good enough to qualify for the state meet this Saturday at Provo High School: David Van Luven, Pam Finegan, Mike Price, Erin Bolton, Pat Ott, and Abbey Peterson. North Summit was the dominant team at Utah State, winning both overall region titles. In the girls it was North Summit with 166, Wendover 101, St. Joseph 48, South Rich 48, Dugway 36, Park City 33, North Rich 24, Manila 12, Tintic 4, Utah School of the Deaf 0. For the boys it was North Summit 113, St. Joseph 104, Dugway 79, South Summit 74, Wendover Wend-over 38, South Rich 36, Park City 32, North Rich 20, ; Manila 10, and Mt. Vernon 1. One problem with the region meet was its timing it was scheduled the same day as the region tennis tournament in Park City. Three track team members, Scott Tatum, Chris Elkins and Randy Dyer were unable to compete, choosing tennis instead. As it was David Van Luven and Pam Finegan led the way for Park City. Van Luven won the 1600-meter run, and almost repeated in the 3200, but was narrowly beaten by a North Summit runner. Van Luven thus qualified for state in both events. Finegan won the 300-meter 300-meter hurdles, a real surprise sur-prise according to track coach Bill Kahn, since Finegan had never trained in the event. Then Finegan took fourth in the 100-meter hurdles hur-dles (the top four qualifiers move on to state). Erin Bolton took second in the girls' high jump, while Pat Ott grabbed second in the boys' 110-meter high hurdles. Abbey Peterson took third in the 800 meters, and Mike Price was fourth in the shotput. Kahn said he thinks Van Luven and Ott have the best chande at state, but added that anyone can run a good race, or have a good event on a given day. Kanab and Beaver are expected ex-pected to be the strong teams at state. Last year Kanab won the boys title while North Sevier took the girls' championship. The preliminaries start at 9:30 a.m. at Provo High, with the finals following at 1 p.m. |
