Show O: Teim (ID'CHaDdk : WMsitlle A by David Fleisher Summer in the city Now that spring is nearly over (was it ever here?), let's see what we have to look forward to this summer: Naturally, the first item on the agenda is the Main Street water and sewer project featuring a twelve-foot-deep trench. I've been excited about the trench from the day I first heard about it. I'm convinced this trench will not be as bad as some people think. In fact, I think it will prove to be a nice addition to the town. Once in place, tourists and locals alike will be able to visit the trench at their leisure, day or night, to break up the boredom. Remember when the hippies and their "love ins?" Park City can start another fad: a "trench in." We could sit around the trench, up and down the trench, even sit in the trench, and discuss the important topics of the day. Why not hold conferences at the trench? "The American Bar Association will hold its annual conference this year in Park City, Utah. Members are encouraged to bring clothing for all types of weather, pack their own lunch and water bottles, and a shovel, as the conference will take place in a twelve-foot-deep trench in the center of town." The trench is expected to be gone a few days before the Art Festival in August. If for some reason work is delayed and the trench is still with us, that's fine. There's no reason to cancel the festival because of a silly trench. Park City could have the first ever "Festival in the trench." Marketing the event would be easy: "Utah's not only got the best snow on earth it's also got hidden splendors! Come to the arts. Come to Park City. Come to the trench." Putting the trench aside, there are still other things to do this summer. Depending on the weather, there might be flooding in Salt Lake again, just like last year. If you're feeling energetic and want to take a breather from Park City, you could throw sandbags around and get on national television. Between the floods and the trench, it could be a pretty exciting summer. How about City Council and Planning Commission meetings? When was the last time you attended one? Well, you'll have your chance this summer because both governmental bodies will be meeting on Wednesdays and Thursdays. If you want to know how your money's being spent, or where the next condominium will be built, go to a meeting this summer and stay in touch. However, you may want to take a pillow with you as these meetings, at times, tend to be moderately boring. The Park City rugby side ("Muckers") ("Muck-ers") played their first game in St. George over the weekend, and they'll be playing all summer long. Local games are played at City Park, so plan on bringing a 36-pack of beer, and have fun. And, watching a rugby game can be a nice way to escape from the trench. Post office visitations can offer a certain amount of variety. The post office has always been a mecca for gossip, and this summer should be no exception. When going to the post office, take your time and listen carefully to the conversation next to you. You'll be surprised how much you can learn in a single day. If developer Monty Gibson comes to town this summer, try to get his autograph. He's a popular guy now. He sued the city for millions of dollars, but the case was recently thrown out of court. It was a pretty big deal, and city officials heaved a big sigh of relief after it was over. What's nice about the summer in Park City is that we locals finally get a chance to be together, when it's not so hectic as in the winter. And it will be nice trench and all. As I walk up Main Street I hear the Ten O' Clock Whistle. |
