Show Soccer teams bitten by travel bug: One heads for Hawaii . . . Have you been watching those airline commercials rave about the wonders of Hawaii lately? Don't they make you drool profusely, wishing you could somehow swing a trip to the place? Well, if you were a young local boy there would be another incentive. A Park City boys' 11-12-year-old soccer team is heading to Hawaii June 29 to play in the Rainbow Invitational Tournament. Tour-nament. The only requirement a cool $550 to cover plane fare and hotel expenses. For 15 of the team's players that large amount of money is not a stumbling block ; they are busy hustling to raise it. The mainstay of the fundraising efforts centers cen-ters around the sale of tickets, priced at $10 each. Top prize is a trip for two to Hawaii, airfare and seven days accommodations included. in-cluded. Other prizes, according accord-ing to Joy Rasmussen of the Recreation Department, are a full season pass to the Park City Ski Area, Sunday brunches at the Yarrow, day passes at Deer Valley, gift certificates to local stores, and other various goodies. Rasmussen said the soccer players are also selling Centennial Cen-tennial hats at $6 each. She added there will be some other sort of fundraising affair af-fair (it hasn't been decided yet) later in May. This is the second year Park City kids have made the trip to Oahu, Hawaii for the Rainbow Tournament. Last year Annie Bowman took a girls' team to the coed tournament, so this year the boys get their turn. Former Recreation Director Bruce Henderson will be leading the troops into battle. Rasmussen said Henderson is the person who originally worked out the arrangements arrange-ments to get Park City invited invit-ed to the tournament last year. Competing with the Park City booters will be 39 other teams from California, Utah, and Hawaii. The action ac-tion begins Saturday, June 30 and concludes Thursday, July 5. The local kids will leave for Hawaii June 28 and return July 7. Rasmussen said the Recreation Department is still looking for additional sponsors to donate prizes. Those interested should contact con-tact the Recreation Department. Depart-ment. Tickets can be purchased pur-chased from soccer players or from the Department. People who have been drooling about a trip to Hawaii, take note there are still a few spaces remaining on the plane which have already been purchased by the Recreation Department. Those seats cost only $399 round trip. Anyone interested in a 10-day 10-day jaunt to hula land should call 649-9461. ... the other to sunny California And if the Rainbow Tournament Tour-nament doesn't suit your tastes, try out the Sun and Surf Tournament in Huntington Hunt-ington Beach, California. That is exactly what another Park City boys' soccer team, ages 13-14, will do June 16-24. Yes, the travel bug has hit Park City soccer. This group will be one of 10 teams in the Sun and Surf Tournament. Kathy Benner, coach of the 13-14-year-old team, said other teams will come from Hawaii, California, and Utah, with another entry making the trip all the way from Guam. Whereas the Park City team heading for Hawaii needs to raise $550 for each player, the team going to California needs only $200 per player. Much of that savings is due to taking the train rather than the plane. Unlike the Hawaii team, the California contingent doesn't have the benefit of any sponsors as yet. Benner said she is looking for spon- m sors, and expects to have some before the trip hits the road. Otherwise, the kids are selling World's Finest Chocolate Bars at $1 each. Also, a dance for middle school kids will be held at the Memorial Building June 1, with proceeds from the $1 admission and the concession con-cession stand going to the team. The most important fundraiser, fund-raiser, however, will be held May 16 at El Papagayo restaurant. The soccer players will be waiters, and all receipts and tips earned during the course of the evening will go to the team. Benner said the restaurant res-taurant is donating the food and the time. Anyone interested in sponsoring spon-soring the team, or looking for other information about the California trip should contact the Recreation Department at 649-9461 or Kathy Benner at 649-6900 (El Papagayo). |
