SALONIKI, OcL 23 During their occupation of the Greek town of Seres the Bulgarians not only deported j many of the population, but also treat-1 ed harshly those left in the town. The first persons to be deported were the priests, professors and other well known persons. The books of the Greek churches and the school books of the Greek schools were burned and replaced by Bulgarian books. The residents of Seres, however, refused for several months to attend church services in the Bulgarian language and to send their children to schools where only Bulgarian was taught, suffered terrible ter-rible punishment. The library of the Greek monastery of St. John, near Seres, rich in old manuscripts, was destroyed. |
