Show MUM CLEAN UP FORET WOOD Commanding Positions of Germans Ger-mans to North Put in Danger After Desperate Fighting. HARD TIME AHEAD I No Breathing Spells to Be Al- lowed Germans During the Winter. WITH THE AMERICAN ARMY NORTHWEST OF VERDUN, Tuesday, Oct 22. (By the Associated Press) In the face of stubborn resistance American forces today cleaned up Bois dc Foret, west of Brieulles, capturing 75 prisoners. The fight near Bois de ; Foret began a week ago today and has been one of the most stubborn since! the beginning of the Meuse-Argonne offensive! The Americans at times fell back under terrific pressure and then rushed rush-ed forward will all their might. On Monday they reached the line cross- ing the nortlfern half of the wood and completed their task today. The cleaning up of this' place endangers the commanding positions of the Germans Ger-mans to the north. No Breathing Spell for Huns WITH TH.E .AMERICAN-FORCES ! NORTHWEST' OF VER DXJ Nf Oct. 23. j (By the Associated Press) Unless j they are saved by their plea for peace the Germans will be subjected to hea-, hea-, i vy hammering along the greater part I of the western front throughout the ! winter. Indications are that it is not) intended to give them a breathing spell. It is pointed out that decreased ac-i ac-i tivily would enable the Germans to ' recuperate to such a degree as to ! make certain a prolongation of the struggle. j During previous winters the enemy I has been able to rest up his forces and replenish his supplies and there is no reason to bejieve ho would not avail himself of the same opportunity now. American Operations Well Planned There are two places on the front j where it is conceded that military op-i op-i erations during the winter will be j virtually impossible but American of-; of-; ficers insist that seventy-five pw cent I of the front offers no real obstacle lo I a continuance of the fighting. It 'is indicated that the Americans' part in the general program is well defined. It is to be- expected that they will continue to deliver short smashing jolts against the pivotal center of the long sweeping line. The big gains being made on the American front and near the sea are conceded to have been due in a large measure to the menacing demonstration by the Americans Amer-icans aud by tho enforced employment by the Germans of thirty divisions there. The enemy will be compelled to mass forces of men and material in front of General Pershing's troops at the expense of other places because to lose hold on Ufe line between tlie Mouse; and Grand Pre would endanger an enormous area. |
