Show SHERIFF REPLIES 10 ATTACKS MADE OH HIS OFFICE "As long as I am sheriff of this county and there is evidence that gambling, bootlegging or other similar crime exists, I am going to undertake to suppress it. These instructions have been issuetl to my deputies, and they are executing them in a manner entirely en-tirely satisfactory to me." That was the statement issued this morning in the form of a defi by Sheriff Sher-iff Herbert PBterson. He had become impatient with what had appeared to him to be unjust criticism of the work of his deputies in eliminating gambling and bootlegging in the community. The sheriff was aroused and handled the situation with a positive candor. He also warned that crime in this city and Weber county will be handled without gloves and without respect as to individuals in-dividuals or races. "This department -will remain absolutely abso-lutely and unqualifiedly within the law," continued Sheriff Peterson. "There will be no petty persecutions nor spite work. But if there Is evidence evi-dence of gambling or bootlegging reported re-ported to this office, my deputies are going to investigate and when they ln-vestiate, ln-vestiate, they investigate thoroughly thoroughly and, in my opinion, efficiently effici-ently and effectively. "I do not care where the crime exists. They may be bankers and capitalists cap-italists or among the foreign population. popula-tion. It makes no difference. They all know whether they are breaking the law and, knowing that fact, they are voluntarily taking chances of arrest. If they do not want to be arrested, they must conduct themselves as law-abiding citizens. There is no logic in having hav-ing laws for the regulation of society and the protection of the decent from the vicious, if they are not enforced. As long as I am sheriff, they will be enforced. My record Is open nobodv controls this office. Exact and impartial impar-tial justice is going to bo done overv citizen. I have no favorites and no pets." v It is the first time Sheriff Peterson has given complete vent to his feelings relative to certain criticisms that have been applied to a series of recent arrests. ar-rests. It is a matter of record that in each instance, where preliminaries have been held, the judgment of the sheriff's deputies in making the arrests ar-rests have been approved by the court in that those arrested either have been fined or bound over for trial in the district dis-trict court. Sixteen arrests were the total of the period between Saturday night and Wednesday. That indicates that the sheriff means business. oo |
