Show Ml WHY THE CONFLICT MUST BE FOUGHT OUT H J In answer to tho question, "What would German victory mean?" Theo- Hk: dore Marburg says: Hi In Prussia's cheap and profitable wars of the past lies the explanation H' of the present murderous assault on H, the peace of the world. , In letting H Germany see that Prusslanlsm can H also bring overwhelming disaster is H to be found the only remedy. The Ger- mans have been parading their "will j to victory." They forgot that, while H. human will has done much to shape V' human hiBtory. In order to Bucceed in a great world-cause it must lie close H beside the will of God. The strugglo I i is a clear-cut fight between wrong in H J Its most hideous and universal forms H .j and right most unquestioned. Success for the German cause would mean the H triumph of a conscious policy of bad H '! faith disregard of solemn obligations J to a neutralized state, of the rules of j war formally subscribed to, and of the H jj human standards which men deemed so well established that it was thought H unnecessary to sot up any lnternatlon-H lnternatlon-H al agreements to safeguard them. It H would mean fastening upon mankind, H j in future years, terrorism and the bar-H bar-H j barous practices of the earliest times, H punishing mercilessly the non-combat- i ant and so defeating the healthy ten-Hi ten-Hi doncy to confine the conflict to the armed forces of the belligerents deliberate de-liberate murder of helpless thousands to secure minor military advantage. To stop short of throwing the Germans Ger-mans back out of conquered territory would mean German triumph, tho source of untold future disaster. It would render impossible for years to come an effective league of nations to discourage future wars. Armaments would know no limit and the United States would be compelled to enter the race in order to defend not only the Monroe doctrine but the very existence ex-istence of the nation. |
