Show FOB TIE ESCAPED WAR POISONERS SALT LAKE, Dec. 26, The dragnet set by the city county and federal officials of-ficials for the apprehension of Ferdinand Ferdi-nand Kude and Kurt G. Wilkins, escaped es-caped prisoners of tho alien enemy section of the war prison camp at"Fort Douglas, who cut through both wire fences of tho prison compound early Monday morning, is expected to result re-sult in tho bringing in for observation of many suspicious characters in Salt Lake and surrounding townB. At a late hour last night no trace of Kube or Wilkins had been found, although al-though war prison and county officials said the arrest of a suspect by Marshal Mar-shal Edwin Street at Lehi for a time gavo Col. Georgo Bryan and other war prison officials hope that one of the men wanted had been apprehended. This suspect, who refused to give an' name, was taken at 3 o'clock about two and a half miles west of Lehi, where the suburban tracks go under the tracks of the Denver & Rio Grande. The capture came after a chase of two hours, during which the marshal chased his man into a drainage drain-age siphon. A posse of ten men, especially es-pecially sworn in, was scouring other portions of the district at the time of the arrest. The prisoner, who was held at Lehi overnight, and who will be brought to the county jail today for investigation, is described by Marshal Street as being be-ing of light complexion, with a beard, standing about five feet five Inches in height and about 30 years of age. Tho fact that he weighs, in the marshal's mar-shal's estimate, but 125 pounds led county officials to believe that he was not one of the escaped men, however desirable his arrest might prove on other grounds. The arrest was ordered by telephone to Lehi by Deputy Marshal McDonald of Midvale, who asked Marshal Street to be on the lookout for a man of the description of the prisoner. 4 While tho man arrested was shabbily shab-bily dressed, he carried a suit of good clothing, new underwear, new shoes and rubbers in his suitcase. He had no gun on his person when searched. Aside from his arrest, which was reported at once to the war prison headquarters, there was considerable other activity yesterday upon the part of many agencies seeking the escaped prisoners. Tho probability that the men had confederates on the outside who secured and passed Into the compound com-pound the wire cutting nippers has led to a search for places where this implement could possibly have been manufactured in Salt Lake or vicinity. The possibility that the men may be bidden and harbored in or about the city by sympathizers has also been taken into account and steps taken to uncover any possible hiding place. Tho penalty for harboring such escaped prisoners is severe. The search Is by no means confined to this city and vicinity, but a nation wide call has been' sent out with descriptions de-scriptions of the men on the chance that they are getting away from the vicinity by motor car or freight train. on |
