The Ameri can steamship Tuscarora, formerly a Eg lake vessel and requisitioned by the u United States shipping board for At- N lantic service, together with her en- m tire crew of thirty -Ave men, is believ- H ed to have been lost at sea somewhere m north of Cape Breton island, according M to advices received in shipping circles 1 today from Nova Scotia. n The crew of the Tuscarora was re- oruited in New England ports. She I was commanded by Captain Crowell from Cape Cod. n The Tuscarora before being requis- U itioned by the shipping board was n owned by the Lehigh Valley Transpor- M tatlon company and operated between w lake ports. In September the vessel E$ wth others was cut In two on tho lakes, ' Pa towed thorugh the Welland canal and I P3 rejoined at Montreal from where she sailed for New York December 6. The feL last word of her was received when she passed Father point on the SL Lawrence the following dav. A large number of former lake ships wore caught In the heavy storm of two weeks ago and all but the Tuscarora have been reported. Today advices were received in shipping circles that parts of a bridge, pilot house and deck timbers from a large steamer had washed ashore on St. Paul Island about thirty miles northeast from Cape North on Cape Breton island. While there is yet no positive identification of the wreckage, shipping men believe it is from the missing lake steamer. ' The vessel was registered as 2836 J tons gross and was built in 1890. 1 |
