Show OF SEABATTLES Secretary Daniels Says Country Coun-try Is Being Alarmed by Stories of Disasters. ORGANIZED SCHEME No Fight Between Combined Fleets and Germans, or Ships Sunk. WASHINGTON, June 9. Widely circulated false reports of naval battles bat-tles and disaster to American and entente en-tente forces have reached the point whore Secretary Daniels has concluded that they are the result of an organized organ-ized conspirac5' to alarm and distress the American people. Today the secretary Issued the fol lowing statement: "The country is being poisoned by rumors of battle and disaster that are without the slltrhtfist fmirulsiHrin. "Among the most persistent of these false reports is one that a naval engagement en-gagement has taken place between the German fleets and the combined fleets of England and the United States and that in this battle sixty English and American ships were sunk or disabled, two of the number being the Pennsylvania Pennsyl-vania and the Texas. "No such engagement has taken place. The American fleet has not been in action. No ship has been lost. The declared policy of the navy department de-partment is one of absolute openness If disaster comes, no effort will be made to minimize it. The people of the United States are asked to trust In this pledge and to aid in stamping out this campaign of rumor that is so plainly the product of disloyalty." |
