Show ATLANTA HAS A CONFLAGRATION Thirty-six Blocks Destroyed With a Loss of Millions of Dollars. ATLANTA, Ga., May 21. Ten thousand thou-sand persons were made homeless tonight to-night and thirty-six closely built city blocks are In ruins, tho result of disastrous dis-astrous fires which swept for nine hours first through the negro soctions and then to the palatial residences In tho fashionable district. Dynamite was resorted to time and again to check the path of the flames, and not until late tonight was tho fire gotten under control. Damage of $3,000,000. Revised estimates late tonight place the damage at between $2,000,000 and $3,000,000. Several warehouses near tho origin of the fire, in tho northeastern part of the city, wore the cmly business houses destroyed. Tho section destroyed destroy-ed is bounded by Hilliard, Prospect place, Edgewood avenue and North avenue. One woman Is reported to have died from shock. Mayor Candler Issued the following statement tonight: "Atlanta greatly appreciates offers of aid that already havo come, but wo can handle the relief situation without with-out them. "There's nothing whatovor to support sup-port the theory that the fires were of Incendiary origin." National guardsmen from Camp Mc-Pheraon Mc-Pheraon are on guard In tho whole fire-swept region. Looters will be dealt with by firm hands. Although there were scores of minor injuries, no one was fatally hurt as the result of the fires. Llttlo Girl Injured. Whilo endeavoring to do her "bit" little 10-ycar-old Nelson Vaughan was injured and had to be taken to the hospital for treatment. Tho llttlo girl with her mother was rushing from her homo, tho mother carrying a baby and Nelson carrying a grip and several packagos, when sho foil and injured her back. The mother fainted. Tho baby was unhurt. Howard Herbert, manager of the Regent Re-gent theater, and G. Maddox, engineer of fire company No. 11, were taken to the hospital overcome by smoke and heat C. Murphy was taken to an infirmary with a broken leg. |
