From tho cotton and can fields of Louisiana to tho wheat and flax fields of the far Canadian north will stretch the brown-tented way. In announcing the piano of tho circuit, tho proprietors say; "Assembling our talent in the historic his-toric city of New Orleans, wo start In mid April on a history-making chautauqua chau-tauqua tour through that great empire em-pire of eastern Texas, cut through tho storied southwest of Arizona and New Mexico and Into southern California, where our tents are raised in early May, when the air is Btlll heavy with the fragrance of the orange blossoms. Then up the King's highway, tho path of the Mission Fathers, through tho vineyard country and into the land of the giant redwoods in northern Cali fornia. Swinging eastward, wo cross tho Sierra Ncvadas and our chautau-quas chautau-quas dot tho principal centers of population pop-ulation in Nevada and Utah. In lato June we are traveling north into tho great irrigated districts of southern Idaho, on through eastern Oregon, down the Columbia and to tho many chautauqua towns of the rich Willamette Willam-ette valley. Going north In July through the cities of the cool Puget sound country in western Washington, across the Cascades into tho inland empire of eastern Washington and northern Idaho and on into Montana in August. This closing month will see tho big tents carried as far east as the Dakota line and north into tho great grain sections of Alberta and Saskatchewan. "The building of this great system of western chauiauqua,s from a small beginning of forty-two assemblies in 1D13 to approximately 300 chautau-quas chautau-quas in 1017, Is, a great story of achievement. From five states in 1913 to thirteen states and two Canadian provinces in 1917 from one small circuit cir-cuit in 1913 to three groat circuits in 1917 from an itinerary mileage of 7000 miles in 1913 to a combined mileage mile-age of more than 37,000 miles in 1917, or ono nnd one-half times the distance around tho world this remarkable expansion ex-pansion has not been by chance. "In the first place it has been because be-cause the chautauqua fills a genuino demand and need In community life of the west. "In the second place it has been because be-cause of the public spirited men and women everywhere in the west who have given freely of their time, who have worked untiringly and with unswerving un-swerving loyalty for the upbuilding of this great movement. "In the third place this exceptional growth has been because of a careful and efficient management, conducting their business on a broad, substantial basis. Infinite care and attention has been paid to every detail, whether In the buying of supplies or the selection of representatives or tho building of programs." oo |
