M PORTLAND, Me., May 22. It was H officially made known that the report- JH ed presence of a submarine off the pJH Maine coast was being Investigated by H naval stations. A patrol scrutiny of these waters pH was ordered following a report to tho H naval stations that a periscope was H slighted late yesterday afternoon and JH that at 6 o'clock last night a subma- Hl rlne was seen running awash off Ma- H Fishermen Sight Submarine. JH On the heels of these reports came H tho word today from three lobster fH fishermen that they had sighted from lH two different points what they be- H ! licved to be a German submarine. H I They sighted the craft, they say, off H I the mouth of the Kennebec river at JH 9:15 o'clock this morning. The fish- JH ermen brought the report to Hopham pl , station. When it was reported to a M naval officer, he furnished the Machias H 1 end of the story and confirmed press iH reports that an investigation was un- H ' der H j It was learned later unofficially that IH ln .coast guard at Oross island had H sighted the supposed submarine and M watched it for five minutes, when it H submerged. The na- H val commander of the Maine district H has forwarded reports of a German H submarine in that vicinity which ho H 1 said were so far "without confirma- H tion." Investigation is continuing.
