LONDON, May 22, 10:10 a, m Tho Manchester Guardian considers the Irish convention "the biggest and most serious undertaking to which Ireland Ire-land has set her hand for generations and one which must be prosecuted j with the vigor and Insistence proportionate propor-tionate to its moment" The Guardian thinks the best hope for the expedient Is that the English . parties mean to stand aloof, and continues: con-tinues: "The task before the convention is extremely difficult, as the speeches of Sir John Lonsdale and Sir Edward Carson show that fires are still burning burn-ing and that tho spirit of compromise does not brook everywhere over tho troubled waters." The paper sees, however, solid ele-j ments of hope and declares that the pacification of Ireland affects both British strength at home and credit abroad.
