Show REJECTION OF THE LIQUOR MEASURE. Last evening at the end of a protest pro-test that for spirit and numbers has had no equal in Ogden, the city commissioners com-missioners publicly announced that the proposed cafe and restaurant liquor ordinance is dead! When the Standard pointed out the dangerous features of the measure, the prediction was made that the good people of Ogden never would allow the proposal to be enacted into law. There were few homes in this city where the measure was not condemned. condemn-ed. Facing state-wide prohibition, the ordinance was ill-advised, to say the least. In operation, it would have been the most dangerous license ever granted in a city with social conditions condi-tions such as exist In Ogden. Last evening we had an exhfbitlon of referendum government. The city commissioners proposed, the people disposed. The demonstration shows how powerful pow-erful aro the people when they assert themselves. Tho protest confirms what we have often said, that the problem of good government In Ogden Og-den could bo solved, if the citizens were to regularly meet and pry into city affairs. They might go further, and consider all phases of public stewardship, stew-ardship, including that of county and state. no . |
