Show GOVERNMENT MAY OPERATE ROADS. President Wilson lias failed to bring the railroad managers and their employes to an agreement. Both sides seem resolved to not yield a single point. There Is nothing left to be done 'but make pbssible the operating of the roads in case of a strike. Congress Con-gress must empower the President to take possession of the railroads in the name of the government with authority to force managers and employes em-ployes to continue at work but in the service of the United States, until the disputed points can be passed on by the Interstate Commerce Commission. Com-mission. The country cannot allow the railroads rail-roads to be closed to traffic. The great arteries of trade must be kept open. In the event of war, the government gov-ernment would be forced to hold a masterful hand over all the railroads. As this would be an .industrial war quite as destructive as a military clash, the same rule that would apply In case of a call to arms, should be invoked. |
