Show I Buddy Ryan Heads Utes Ping Bodie Still Tops the List in Hitting the Ball. Salt Lake, Aug. 29. Did somebody say something about leading batter? If so, Ping Bodie, Seal and Athletic-to-be, will please step forward. For old Pingus and he Isn't so very old at that still tops the Pacific Coast swatsmiths with the healthy average of .329 for his season's work thus far. Looks like Ping is earning his meal ticket with Harry Wolverton's club, and It won't surprise anyone to Bee him stick with the Athletics. When a fellow's hitting the way Ping is, though, it's a shame to send him to the Mackmen. He deserves to be sent somewhere his hits will help win a ball game once in a while. But that's getting away from the subject of Coast league batting. Put on'your old specs and peruse the averages Careful investigation will reveal the fact that Justin Fitzgerald, Fitz-gerald, team-mate of Ping's, who has been out of the game a great deal of the time, is clouting .342. A squint at Salt Lake figures also will reveal the fact that the Utes haven't slumped slump-ed appreciably in swatting. Ryan Heads Utes. Budy Ryan is leading the local tribe with an average of .313, and Brief is close at his heels, having brought his figures up to the respectable respect-able average of .30S. Dick Bayless has been slumping a trifle, and is now hitting '.301. But when it comes to team batting there Isn't any club that can boast of an average like Blankenship's tribe possesses. The local gang Is clicking the agate at a rate of .272, seven points better than the nearest rival, Portland, the Beavers swatting 2G5. San Francisco is threatening to nose out the Beavers and cop second place in batting, showing up this week with an average of .262. Pa Patterson's Bengalic pack comes next with .269, and its trailed closely by Los Angeles with .257. Oakland has slumped somewhat, and Is now the poorest batting club In the league, with an average of .256. Kenworthy Leads Oaks. Kenworthy is leading the Commuters Commut-ers in stickwork, the Howardite swat-smith swat-smith boasting a percentage of .319. Southworth heads the Ducks with .313, and Harry Wolter, who was recently re-cently sold to the Chicago Cubs, is at the head of the Angel host. "Wolter Is batting .312. The Hampats, despite the fact that they are housed In second place, are not hitting at all well, not having a single piayer wno is oauing .duu or better. In run getting Biff Schaller, that fleet-footed demon of the SealB, Is leading the league. Biff has crossed the platter to hang up a score 97 times this season. Bunny Brief, whose numerous home runs aid him .considerably in the matter of run getting, has counted 93 times. Next to Brief, Harl Maggert of the Angels, who always looks like he had a grouch against all the world and doesn't care what happens, thus deceiving de-ceiving the general public, is the chief scorer. Maggert has planted his right foot squarely on the gutta percha 85 times. Risberg Leads Tigers. Risberg is the leading scorer for Vernon, having registered SI times, and Kenworthy leads the Oaks, 69 tallies tal-lies being his total. Willie has counted count-ed more often than any other Duck and has 79 runs to his credit. Shocking though it may seem, In the eight games with Portland Bunny Brief failed to help his home run record rec-ord any, and still stands at the top of the heap with 24 four-sack drives. Bodie and Schaller of the ScHa each have 16 to their credit, and Louis Guisto of the Beavers has 15. Lane of Oakland Is the leading base thief of the circuit. He has purloined purloin-ed 31 sacks, and is closely followed by Maggert of Los Angeles, who has stolen 28 cushions this season. The Angels also boast two more sack thieves in the persons of Wolter and Ellis, who have taken 26 and 22 sacks, respectively. Ducky Jones and Biff Schaller of the Seals each have gotten away with 27 stolen bases. Morris Rath leads the Utes in this respect with 21 purloined pur-loined cushions. |
