Show LABOR DAY IS BEING OBSERVED R HE . CANYON Capital joined forces -with labor today to-day to make ttie observance of the 1916 Labor Day a memorable one. This was evidenced In the fact that banks were closed to business, as prescribed by federal law, while all persons, who are members of organized organ-ized labor, or allied with labor organizations, organ-izations, either through friendship' or family ties, and whose services could be dispensed with for a few hours, spent at least a part of the time iu observance of the. national holiday. Many took advantage of the opportunity oppor-tunity for a trips Jnto the canyons and other places noted for scenic attractiveness, attrac-tiveness, while others, who did not feel Inclined to pass the time In an outing, attended to small business matters, which demanded their attention, atten-tion, but which were not in the line of pursuit of their regular avocations. It was stated this morning that city and county offices would he closed to the transaction of business. Those public officials, who' did not participate partici-pate In the labor day celebration, were therefore afforded an opportunity opportuni-ty to take an active part in arranging final details for the Fashion Show which will be staged in the city for three days, beginning next Thursday. A few of the mercantile and manufacturing manu-facturing concerns that employ union labor proposed to close at least a part of the da3r to give their employees the advantage of the outing that had been arranged. Federal buildings were also, closed to the transaction of business. At the postofflce the regular holiday hours were observed, while employees and officials at the Ogden District Forest Service were given the opportunity of a "day off." The Labor Day celebration In Ogden canyon is under the direction of the combined Ogden Labor unions. A program pro-gram of sports and amusements is being be-ing carried out. The program follows:: fol-lows:: The program of sports, which will begin at 2p. m., is as follows: Boys' race (not over six years). Boys' race not over 12 years). Boys' race (12 to 15 years). Girls' race (not over 12 years). Girls' race (12 to 15 years). Young men's race (17 to 10 years). Young ladies' race (17 to 20 years). Married ladies' race. Union men's race. Race for union men's wives. Fat men's race. Officials' race (officers of trade unions). Egg race for women). Egg race (for men). Throwing contest (for ladies). For each event, first and second prizes well worth competing for have been donated to the committee by Ogden Og-den business firms, to be awarded immediately im-mediately after the program is concluded. con-cluded. Prizes Kvlll also be awarded to the oldest union man and the largest lar-gest family on the grounds. The main entertainment of the evening eve-ning will be a dance In the Hermitage hall, a special feature of which is to be a prize waltz. oo |
