Show LAST MONTH OF I9I6BASEBALL New York, Sept. 4 The beginning of the last full month of tho 1916 baseball season brings no diminution in the intensity of the races In the National and American leagues. In fact, leading teams in tho two major leagues are closer together. Boston lears the American and Brooklyn the National, but both of their leads were reduced. The National league race has superseded super-seded the American in interest. Brooklyn Brook-lyn now Is threatened more than at nnv time since it has held tho lead. Boston and Philadelphia have crept so close that they are in a position to go ahead of Brooklyn at the least turn in the leaders' fortunes. Philadelphia Phil-adelphia played the better ball of the three leaders during the week and cut down the advantage held by the Braves and Superbas. Brooklyn's lead was but several points at the end of tho week. Alexander, Friday, established a new major league record of fourteen shut-outs for one season. Tho closing intersectlonal games of the National in the west had these results: West seven, east eleven. Boston, which had doubled Us lead in the previous weelt, had Its lead over Detroit reduced by half during the week. The Red Sox lost three of the series of four games at St. Louis and St. Louis moved from sixth to fourth place. The margin between the first six teams in the American was reduced from fifty-five to forty-eight points. Boston and Detroit did not change their relatve position, but Chicago, St. I.ouis and Cleveland moved athead at the expense of New York. |
