The Hudson regained possession of the cup by again lowering the record from Sacramento to Tallac, reducing the record of tho best previous time thiee hours and twenty-six minutes by four minutes The Hudson set a new record under somowhat adverse conditions. The Hudson hold the cup up to October Oc-tober 1, and it was on exhibition in the Hudson booth at the Panama Pacific Pa-cific Exposition On that date a rival car made the distance in three hours and twenty-Bix minutes bettering the time ot the Hudson by three minutes The rules governing the contest call for a stock car. Because tho car that made the new record was not stock It was protested, but without avail. The rival car widely advertised the fact that it had created a new record, so Arnold Brothers of Sacramento, possessors pos-sessors of the trophy gave it up to the rival car. At the same time Mr Arnold mentally resolved that ho would get the trophy back with a Hudson in a few days. On October 3, only two days after tho rival car had made its performance, perform-ance, Arnold Brothers, In conjunction with A, H Patterson, of Stockton, also a Hudson dealer, went after the trophy. Mr Patterson drove the car, a 1916 model, absolutely stock Once more the Hudson made good bringing the record down to three hours and twenty-two minutes, four minutes better bet-ter than the performance of its rival. This splendid time was made by Mr. Patterson despite an accident at Placervllle. Mr. Patterson, who was not familiar with the road, misjudged a turn noar that town and skidded into a telegraph pole breaking five spokes in the left rear wheel and also bending the rear fender down over tho wheel. A stop was necessitated to make repairs. Due to the condition of the wheel he had to drive carefully for the remainder of the trip. Arnold Brothors are awaiting their next rival with a Hudson Chip on their shoulders. |
