Norgren has tendered his resignation resigna-tion as coach of the University of Utah athletic teams. The action comes as a shock, but not as a surprise, as the coach had been considering his resignation sinco the close of the recent re-cent football season, when he said he thought the spirit of the student body was not such as to Inspire a man to staj. The final straw broke In bas-kc-tball training when only a few of his varsity regulars appeared regularly regu-larly for practice and the freshmen team showed little inclination to support sup-port the coach In his endeavors to build a team for next year. Tho coach said last night that he haled to quit, because of a deep feeling feel-ing for tho few regulars who had woiked like Trojans for him and had gone through rigid practices manfully manful-ly He said, though, that he found only a few such men and that the student body as a whole was not properly prop-erly supporting athletics. This was shown plainly when with abundant football material last year, he said, many men who were capable athletes ath-letes throw up the sponge because they were shown no favoritism and did not straightway win berths on the first team. "The attitude among local university univer-sity athletes seems to be," he said, "that if a man cannot make the first team immediately he should quit. This Is far from manly and certainly is not conducive to good results to the school " The coach said that he was not resigning re-signing out of any friction with the faculty or governing bodies, and that in so far as he was concerned he had found the university one to be admired ad-mired in all but one respect athletic athlet-ic spirit. He said that no coach can afford to waste his time at a school whore "parlor rats" abound, as he calls the society bug who places dances dan-ces and co-eds above the hard grind of the athlete. |
