Show I HEAVY STORMS I IN CALIFORNIA H Los Angeles, Cal., Jan. 17. Two vnen were reported drowned, and more than 100 people were homeless to-J to-J night as a result of the heavy rain-Hi rain-Hi storm which has caused almost every river and stream in southern Call- -m fomia to overflow its banks and in- undate the lowlands adjacent. Fred Smith and A. Rlvore, ranch- ers, were reported to have lost theli lives late toda; while trying to Yon swollen streams. A tributary of the Santa Aana rivei overflowed its banks near Redland; and flooded 20 houses in the low lands. More than 60 persons were rescued from tho flooded district and taken to a refugee camp established at a sanitarium nearby. Twelve houses in East Highlands San Bernardino county, were surrounded sur-rounded by the flood waters of the Santa Ana river. The occupants were taken out by rescue parties. The homeless families were cared for tonight to-night at an orange packing house. Street car and railroad traffic throughout southern California was demoralized and numerous accidents resulted. Damage at Bakersfield. Bakersfield, Cal., Jan. 17. Property Proper-ty damage estimated at $250,000 was caused in the Midway oil district-today when a southwest gale that aB sumed the proportions of a tornado swept the section, leveling 400 derricks der-ricks and wrecking engine houses, bunk houses and dwellings. The greatest damage was done in what Is known as the North Midway and Mc-Kittrlck Mc-Kittrlck fields. No lives were lost and no one was seriously hurt. The Associated Oil company lost G4 out of S4 derricks In one field of its operations. One hundred carloads of materials for rebuilding have already been ordered or-dered to the devastated fields. |
