Show NEW CHIEF FOR SALT LAKE CITY , Salt Lake, Jan. 18. C. W. Shores was last night appointed chief of police po-lice of Salt Lake by unanimous vote of tbo city commission. With tho filing and approval of his bond today, Mr. Shores will automatically automati-cally become the active head of the police force. Ono at the, interesting bits of news developed yesterday in connection with the appointment of Chief Shores I was the discovery'mado by Mayor W. I Mont Ferry that tho new chief is a Democrat. Mayor Ferry said that he had no notion of his politics until after Mr. Shores had agreed to accept ac-cept the appointment. By the first bit of masked strategy that has been detected in the open session of the present commission, recommendations for appointments made last night by Karl A. Scheid were sidetracked. Upon the motion of Commissioner Hober M. Wells, they were referred to the committee of the whole. Tho fight, it is understood, under-stood, is on the appointment of a license li-cense assessor. For this position the name of H. Warren Smith, present chief deputy in the recorder's ofice, was proposed, Devcaux R. Wilson was proposed for the position of chief deputy recorder; F B. Hammond for clerk of the police court, which position Mr. Wilson now holds, and Mrs. J. P. Lyon was named for appointment as a clerk, to succeed Mr. Hammond. One motion covered the several appointments. Hardly had It been read when Mr. Wells presented pre-sented for reading his motion that the appointments be referred. Onjy Mr. Scheid voted against the motion of Mr Wells. |
