Seely In his audit of the books of Salt Lake county, the county has overcharged the state $1,-l100 $1,-l100 for jurors' fees. The state will put in a claim to recover this amount with the county auditor. "I do not believe," said Deputy Auditor Aud-itor Seely, "that it was intentional on tho part of the county to overcharge tho state, but, none tho less, I have found that the state has been charge! with jurors' foes in civil cases which should have been paid by the county. Doubtless, the overcharge was duo to a mistake by ono of the deputy clerks engaged In the court work." Under the law, the fees for jurors in criminal cases before the district court are paid by the state and the jurors' fees in civil cases by the county. coun-ty. The overchargen unearthed by Mr. Seely show that during the January Janu-ary and April terms of tho Third district dis-trict court last year the state was charged with the jurors' feos in a number of civil cases handled by the criminal division. The state auditor's office insists twhat tho fact that tho civil cases in question were heard before what had been informally Indicatod by the judges jud-ges as the criminal division did not obligate the state to pay the jury charges. |
