Show Chicago Grain Chicago, Jan 18 Higher cable quotations put strength today into wheat. Stimulus for buyers was found also in reports of cold weather damage to the fall-sown domestic crop and in the fact that receipts were decreasing both northwest and southwest. Again In the European visible supply total had only a tem porary bearish effect. Opening prices, which ranged 1-8 to 7-Sc higher with May at $1.29 1-8 to 1.29 1-2 and July at 1.22 1-8 to 1 22 1-2. were followed by a moderate reaction and then a fresh upturn. Prospects of larger receipts tended to weaken corn. The strength of nheat, however, acted as an offset. After opening a shade to l-4c lower, the market rallied to about yesterday's yester-day's finish. Oats showed independent strength. There was continued active buying on the theory that oats wore at too wide a discount as compared with corn. Selling pressure on lard weakened the provision list as a whole. Higher prices on hogs were apparently ignored. ig-nored. The wheat close was buoyant, 2 3-. to 3c net higher with May at 1.31 5-8 and July at 1.24 3-4. The corn close was unsettled at 1-S l-4 to 3-Sc net advance. Afterward the provision market hardened in response to a comparative compara-tive letup in the profit taking bl longs In lard.
