Show uj IIESTIGJT1 OF DERAILMENT An investigation of the derailment of the two front wheels of a Southern Pacific engine at Kaw, Nevada, several sev-eral days ago was completed last night. Tho Investigation committee was composed of Trainmaster H. W. Wlstner, W. D Day, road foreman of engines; H. G Stoner, Division Engineer Engi-neer Otis Weeks and Herbert Bast and Its findings follow: "Tho board finds that as train No. 2 was passing over east switch Kaw, and running 25 or 30 miles por hour, forward pair of wheels on forward tnk truck, engino 2147, second engine en-gine in train, derailed at heel or filler block or switch point, and ran on ground for distance of 1485 feet, when train was stopped and Lank roratled. Track and equipment was In good condition except It waB found that steam heat hose coupling on rear of tank, helper engine 2803, had been broken off. It was found that regular regu-lar hose hanger had been broken off at some previous time, and that a wire was used to hold coupling up. This wire broken by coupling getting caught in pilot of engine 2447, allowing allow-ing coupling to drag. Steam heat hose coupling was of a Chicago make "It is the opinion of this board that the wire used in support steam hose coupling on tank helper engine 2S03 broke, allowing hose to drop down and catch on lead rail of each switch Kaw and under pilot of engine 2247 pushing it to the north, breaking coupling off and allowing it to lodge at the heel or filler block of switch point where tank wheel caught it, causing same to leave the track Steam hose coupler shows plainly flange marks and is otherwise badlv scarred Indicating that It had been dragged or knocked about." The total damage tot rack and engine, en-gine, it was said, amounted to $17.50. 1 nn |
