Show -ou . 1IDERED BY 01 : Of 11TJI GANG Attorney F E. Hansen, claim agent of the Utah Light & Power company, returned to Salt Lake yestorday from Cokevlllo, Wyo., whore he conducted a personal Investigation into the recent re-cent outbreak of the Whitney outlaw band, In which his brother, Dan Hansen, Han-sen, marshal of Cokevlllo, was murdered mur-dered last Friday. Mr. Hanson brought the body of his brother to Tooele, the Hansen family home, where funeral services will be held this afternoon. "I am convinced that none other than Bert Dalton, a member of the Whitney gang, murdered my brother," said Attorney Hansen. "The inquest pointed the hand of guilt at Dalton, who was arrested shortly after the murder He tried to lay the blame on the Whitney brothers, but the Whitney brothers by reputation fight ' in the open and Marshal Hansen was " killed from ambush. Tracks left by I Dalton show beyond doubt that he Is i the murderor "There are many brave men In j Cokeville, brave enough to stand up j against any kind of a gun fight, but i among those I would not count Sher- j Iff Ward of Evanston or Sheriff Rich of Montpclier. After they arrived at j Cokeville the' seemed particularly de- 5 slrous to remain in town under cov- j er They oxhibltcd no willingness to get out and attempt to find the Whlt- I ney brothers or members of their gang. Citizens of Cokevilcl arrested Dalton. "When my brother was shot he was on his way to meot Sheriff Ward, on whom he had called for assistance In capturing the Whitney brothers Ward went to Cokeville In an automobile. I received Information from reliable sources that Ward passed my dyln brother along the roadside, heard him cull for help, but feared stopping, on grounds that the Whitney brothers might be In ambush. "I mot Ward in Cokeville and called him a coward to his face. He started I to resent it, but Cokevllel men repeated re-peated my accusation nnd, while he j was in Cokeville, ho did not dare to J leave the confines of a friendly sa- loon. There Sheriff Rich of Montpeller joined him. During our investigation wo learned that Charles Manning, who has lived in Cokeville since the Whitney brothers broth-ers became active In that section of Wyoming, Is a friend of the Whltneys. j He admitted that the Whitney brothers broth-ers called on him the night before tho murder and told him of their scheme to blackhand a resident of Cokeville out of $1,500. "Authorities found that Manning 1 had photographB said to have been taken three weeks ago of himself and the two Whitney brothers in an automobile. auto-mobile. It was also learned that, ou the night before the murdor. Manning left Cokeville for the mountain passes with two big six-shooters and double belts of cartridges. When he returned he was without the weapons. It is tho general opinion among citizens of Cokeville that Manning furnishes the Whitney brothers ammunition and other supplies and keeps them In touch with the movements of agents . of the law. "So convinced are the authorities in Cokovllel that Dalton murdered Marshal Mar-shal Hansen that they will file charges against him. He Is known to be a close associate of the Whitney brothers, broth-ers, but not of the dashing character of the two principal bandits." The widow and son of Marshal Hanson, Han-son, also his brothers. E. and F. E. Hansen, accompanied the body of" the - murdered man to Tooele, where funeral fu-neral services took place today. |
