Aftor occupancy occu-pancy of Its present quarters for sixty-four years, the office of the first presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is to be moved Into a new home. And this change of quarters includes the erection erec-tion of a new and modern building on the same block in which the present pres-ent office of the first presidency is located. lo-cated. Plans for the change contemplated are now under consideration by the first presidency and the presiding bishopric of the church. It Is said that there is some present indecision as to the location of the new building, build-ing, but that there is definite conclusion con-clusion to the effect that It will he erected, and that work upon Its construction con-struction will commence as soon as this one matter has been finally settled set-tled upon. Tho project that appears now to meet with most favor Is to erect a splendid modern structure at the corner cor-ner of South Temple street and College Col-lege avenue. Tho avenue runs north into the block from South Temple street on the east of the Hotel Utah and the Desoret gyrnpasium building. There is an attractive, spacious and valuable corner available for the new president's building, and Its utilization utiliza-tion will afford a site for tho new structure und at tho same time permit per-mit to remain as an old landmark tho present office building of the first presidency, which stands between and adjoins tho Beehive house and the Lion house. It is estimated that the cost of tho now president's building will bo between be-tween 5150,000 and $200,000, and even the highest of these amounts may be overreached If In the Judgment of the first presidency and the presiding biBhoprlc present and future needs shall Justify such expenditure. IIow-ever.as IIow-ever.as to details, these will bo made public as soon as the location shall have been decided upon and a conclusion con-clusion reached as to the number of offices and othor rooms that shall be provided, Of Historic Value. The present home of the first presidency presi-dency was the first public building erected in tho west Construction was begun In tho year 1S48, and it was occupied oc-cupied lu 1S19. It was the governor's office of the territory of Utah at that time. Governor Brigham Young utilized util-ized It as his official headquarters In territorial matters Tho building Is, of atlobe, and It was orected by the Mormon Mor-mon pioneers working in the blended capacities of adherents to religious faith and pioneer community makers , in the then extremo west. Governor Young occupied the place as his territorially offilcal quarters until the city hall and the council house were erected. Tho city hall is now the central home of the city police department, and the council house stood where now Is tho Deseret News bulfding. In what Is now the office of-fice of the presidency of the Mormon church the territorial legislatures met, afterwards holding their sessions in tho council house and the city hall. When the governor's office was moved to new quarters the old building build-ing officially became tho headquarters headquar-ters of the first presidency, and these officials have occupied It continuously since. Indeed, the first presidency shared the building with the governor from the beginning, and until the lat-ter's lat-ter's headquarters were shifted. This situation arose from a necessity that in subsequent years was outgrown with tho development and upbuilding of the commonwealth. |
