Show WARNING ISSUED OF COMING FROST Orchardists Are Preparing' to Smudge to Save the Fruit Crop Weather Bureau Forecasts Freezing Weather for Tonight Buds So Far Have Suffered But Little Damage. Considerable uneasiness prevails among the fruit growers because of the threatening frpst and those wio have smudge pots on hand aro preparing pre-paring to have them burning in the orchards tonight Acting Manager C A. Hickenlooper of the Pioneer Fruit company and a resident of Pleasant View, states tMal he thinks no damage ws done the fruit tree buds last night, but that Jack Frost has assumed a threatening attitude He also states that if Cao wind subsides today and tho temperature tempera-ture does not rise materially thore is great danger of heavy losses In the orchards tonight No smudge pots wero used last night, but at C o'clock this morning some of tho orchardists wero lamenting lament-ing that they did not have them burning among the trees. Tho temperature tem-perature nt that Lime registered only '-C degrees above zero, a dnngorous point for tender buds. Soon after sunrise sun-rise tho temperature was t 27 degrees de-grees above zero and at 9 o'clock It had only raised to 29 degrees. It Is said that a temperature of only 27 degrees above zero Is extromely dangerous dang-erous to fruit blossoms and thnt when It goes below that point artificial heat must he supplied to savo tho fruit. It Is thought that some of tho apricot buds were nipped last night. |
