Rowe, Episcopal bishop of tho missionary district of Alaska, while on a recent -visit to Seattle, Se-attle, preached a sermon on Alaska, enthusiastically In praise of It and of the attractions which it affords In the course of that sermon ho made the following expressions "Women of Boston, tho New England Eng-land states, the most cultured and refined, re-fined, go up to Alaska to work in our missions, and we can't induce them to leavo the country, oven when they have sacrificed their health for their work, . "Alaska Is the great treasure house for the nation. But the country will he slow to develop as long as the transportation trans-portation facilities, are held back to the dog team and canoe methods ' The TAnana -and the Kuskokwlm valleys oan support vast populations, and I look to see the day when the ranges will be covered with cattle. That Is the best, place for stock raising, rais-ing, as tho product can bo shipped to market much cheaper than from Montana. Mon-tana. "The men who have opened up Alaska Alas-ka have risked their lives and wasted fortunes. It Is a crime that these men can't have ause for their discoveries. dis-coveries. The claims are so tied up they can't realize on them. The government gov-ernment should act quickly, so justice may bo done " It Is n cause of shame and humiliation humilia-tion that Alaska Is held back in the way it has been held by the inattention inatten-tion of congress, and by the lawless whims of a lot of faddists in power. Alaska will welcome tho day when congress shall give to that territory some wi6e and helpful legislation, and allow' the people there a form of self-government self-government comparable to that enjoyed enjoy-ed by tho people of territories in tho United States, and also permit the peoplo to mlno coal, freely take up agricultural lands ,and use the timber' and water power as they have need Fred Hellig in Portland Telegram. nr |
