H The growth of tlic United States is in more than one way made H evident, but no comparison is more impressive than that contained H in the treasury report showing the money in circulation in 1870 and H today. H In 3S79 the United States was well along toward complete re- H covery from the effects of the Civil War and the American people H were inclined to boast of their wealth and numerical strength. H 'As compared with today, the United States of 32 years ago was in H its swaddling clothes. H The circulation statement of the United States treasury for H April 1 places the general stock of money at $3,540,000,000; in 1879 H there was less than one-fourth that total, or $816,000,000, of which Hj $624,000,000 was paper money- Hi The gold coin in 187.9 was $96,262,000, and subsidiary silver H $67,900,000, or $164,162,000. Today the gold stock in this country ji is $1,737,000,000 or nearly 20 times greater than in 1879. H'j The great volume of money in circulation in the United. States Hj is one of the best assurances that when confidence is again restored, H and the money is allowed to work, the country will recover quickly H: from, the present slump. |
