He as told that if he worked, Jils time of imprisonment would be only ten days, but that If ho refused to work he would remain in the bastile the full term, 20 days. The man stated that ho would not work, no matter what the Inducement, and that ho would spend 20 days in idleness rather than go on the road. Ho was placed In a dark coll where It Is cool, and where tho flies will not molest him. In tho cell thero Is no bedding or other comforts, but ho readily adapted hlmBol fto the situation situ-ation by stretching himsolf on the cement floor and falling fast asleep. AVhen tho sheriff tried to persuado him that it would be bettor for him to work a little and shorten his time of Imprisonment, he stated that he would not think of such n thing. "I have been mistreated for a number num-ber of years," he said, "and I might as well go ahead and take tho long end. I am hardened to such tilings and It does not cut much figure with me whether 1 am In a dark cell or a light one. Believe me, J will get along on bread and water all' right. No road work in mine."
