Show UU Sent Through the Mail by a Girl of Respectability Easton, Pa., Aug. 30 Charged with having written hundreds of anony- 1 mous letters of a scurrilous, defama- J tory, indecent character, and sending them through the mails to more than i a .score of residents in this city, in- I eluding clergymen, business men and , women, Miss Harriet De Witt, daughter daugh-ter of one of the city's well known and respected citizens, has been arrested ar-rested and Is held in ball for a hearing hear-ing Friday before United States Commissioner Com-missioner Turner In nearly all of the letters, the anonymous an-onymous writer attacks either the character of the person to whom the letter Is addressed or that of some relative or friend. In several Instances Instan-ces there are charges of criminal conduct con-duct For nine years these offensive, anonymous letters-have-been-recelved and many complaints have been sent to the postofflce department and, several sev-eral inspectors anchsecrefservlce men have been assigned to fathom the case and failed. At last Inspector Shaneberger was put to work to run down the writer and the evidence he secured during the last two months caused him to make the complaint that res"lted In Miss De Witt's arrest.
