Show SHERIFF CUTLER INVESTIGATES CONCESSIONS. ORDERS THAT "CHANCE FEATURE" BE CUT OUT LOCAL S1IOAV IS GIVEN "ONCE OVER." As stated elsewhere in this issue, a merry-go-round blew into town a few days ago, likewise a shooting gallery, likewise a stand of concessions, conces-sions, games of chance, etc. In granting the license for the concessions, con-cessions, the town authorities were a "little leary," but made what investigation in-vestigation they could on the surface, sur-face, and granted the license, instructing in-structing the marshal to "keep his eye peeled" on the outfit, anyway. All went merry as a marriage bell until Wednesday evening, when Sheriff Sher-iff Cutler of Beaver "happened" into in-to town and at once was attracted by the sweet strains of music floating from the music-engine of the merry-go-round. Wending his way thither, he also clapped his eye on the chance games being pulled off and decided to try a throw himself, which he accordingly ac-cordingly did. The Sheriff must have had bad luck, for he at once gave the concern the "once over" and notified no-tified the proprietor that they were running a game not in full harmony with the statutes so provided. It is said that a local sympathizer with the proprietor and his games, undertook to instruct! the Sheriff as to his duties along the lines of law enforcement, as well as giving him a digest of the State Laws on the subject, sub-ject, but the interference didn't "digest" "di-gest" well with either the Sheriff or with Marshal Baxter, and the latter gave the meddler to understand where to tie up. The proprietors of the concessions were reasonable and amenable to advice, but the party in sympathy with that sort of thing, refused to be comforted. It is said that the concession games were "loaded" heavily against the patron so that he had only a chance of about 6 in 120 of winning a prize. One patron is also reported as having hav-ing purchased a pillow, which ought not to have cost over 7 5 cents, paying pay-ing $2 for the same. The Sheriff finally informed the. proprietors they could continue to run their games if the percentage handicap was changed so as to give value with each payment into the games, but that the alleged gambling feature of the games must be cut out instanter which was done, and the show, swings merrily on. |
