Show T-birds defeat Cal State to end season Leonard Walterscheid, Moab, was the leading punt returner in the RMAC last year and pass receiver. He was converted back to a defensive back this year but has four7ear's with the T-Birds. The teams leading rusher for the season Wayne Ritter, Aztec, New Mexico will all be lost to graduation. On the defensive line some . familiar names will be missing next year including Mike Shaw, Las Vegas, Nev. a noseguard and Terry Lundberg of Roosevelt, a defensive tackle. Other offensive losses will be Jon Winstead, an end from Fullerton, Calif, and tight end Paul Nihipali of Laie, Hawaii. For the second successive year the Southern Utah Thunderbirds defeated the Diablos of Cal State-Los State-Los Angeles and the victory gave the T-Birds a .500 season mark with a record of five and five. The T-Birds with two touchdown touch-down strikes by Tom Kingsford, Jr. and a strong defense turned in a 14-7 victory to even out the season for the T-Birds and their third successive win. The action took place Saturday evening in Los Angeles. Kingsford at the helm hit five of 13 passes, for 82 yards and two touchdowns. The first was a 40 yard aerial to Rich Hernandez and the second was a 11 yard touchdown pass to Ben Dodson. Both TD's came in the first half of play and the T-Bird defense showed its muscle in the second half after the Diablos came back with a tally and threatened again in the fourth period. Kingsford was injured in the second half of play and freshman Scott Burns came off the bench to direct the offensive attack. Although the T-Birds did not get back on the boards a 60 yard pass by Burns from inside his own ten got SUSC out of trouble and allowed the defense to hold off the charging Cal State crew. For SUSC it was their first no-losing no-losing season in the past 11 years. The loss for Cal State-Los Angeles finished out the season with a record of 5-3-1. Nine members of the SUSC crew were in action for the last time as they finished out their careers as members of the T-Bird T-Bird squad. The nine graduating seniors include: Mike Santiago, from , Scott-sdale, Scott-sdale, Ariz., Larry Spurgeon, Poway, Calif.; and Robert Stuyvesant, Las Vegas, Nev. all regular starting defensive backs. |
