Winners named in Poetry Contest winner Jacquelin Griffin for her poem "Anna of the Loom", to second place winner Ruth Challis The Southern Utah Poetry Society recently held its annual Awards Presentation Meeting in the Southern Utah State College library. This gathering of Senior Division Poets culminated three contests which have been sponsored in southern Utah during this bicentennial year. Sponsoring the Serious Poetry catagory was the Southern Utah State College Department of Arts and Letters, represented by Ruth Challis. Cash prizes were awarded to Mae Boyter, third place winner for "My Oldest Sister", second place winner Iris Corry for "Family Reunion", and first place winner Mae Boyter for "After Mourning". State Bank of Southern Utah sponsored the Bicentennial catagory, and cash prizes were awarded by Stan Forsyth to third place winner Sidney Hahne for "You Might Have Been", to second place winner Mae Boyter for "Vaguards of an Elect , Land", and to first place winner Iris Corry for "Allegheny' Sharpshooter". Sons of the Utah Pioneers sponsored the Pioneer Division, and cash prizes were awarded by Alva Matheson to third place for "My Handcart Heritage", and to first place winner Iris Corry for "Squaw Cave". First Secruity Bank sponsored the Light Verse (humorous) catagory, with Max Miller presenting cash prizes to third place winner Marion Hahne for "Model Moderator", second place winner Marion Hahne for "I Got the Message", and to first place winner Belden Lewis for "The Dandelion". Southern Utah Poetry Society sponsored the Newcomer's Award, and the cash prize was presented by president Jacquelin Griffin to Jewel Larsen for her poem "Forsaken". Chairman of the event was Inez Cooper, and refershments wer served by secretary Fern Hunter and vice-president Sidney Hahne. Judging was by professional critique Peggy Tangren, and readers for the evening included Sidney Hahne, Belden Lewis, Inez Cooper and Jacquelin Griffin. . |
