Over 800 high school students from Utah, Nevada and Arizona are expected to participate in the Abe Lincoln High School Debate Tournament February 9 -10 at Southern Utah State College. "High school debate is progressing at an outstanding out-standing pace, and we expect ex-pect to have some of the top debate teams in the western U.S. in attendnace," SUSC Debate Coach M. L. Smith said. All Utah high schools, and several schools in the adjacent ad-jacent states, have been invited to participate in the two-day contest which will begin early Friday morning and end, with an awards assembly, Saturday afternoon. af-ternoon. Schools which have a good chance of winning the first, second and third place seepstakes prizes, according to Coach Smith, are Bingham High School, . Timpview High School, East High School, Orem High School, Provo High School, and Cedar High School. Individual debate teams . tabbed as major contenders in the annual SUSC contest are Mcintosh and Beck from Hillcrest, Pearson and Kouris from Bingham; Butler and Burch from Timpview; and Condas and Horsley from East. "The SUSC forensics squad views this tournament as a tremendous opportunity to show SUSC and Cedar City at their best to visiting high school students," Smith said. SUSC squad members directing tournament activities ac-tivities include Cara Thorup, Riverton; Craig LeDuc, West Jordan; Lisa Kay, South Jordan; and Neil Gardner, Cedar City. Appel Tuxhorn, South Jordan, and Jennifer Riggs, Riverton, are in charge of oratory competition. Chris Kerecman, Orem, Frank Misak and Jan Merrill, Riverton, are directing extemporaneous speaking. Kayron Madson, Payson, and Linda Nelson, Ogden, will direct Impromptu speaking competition.. Vickie Green, South Jordan, and Craig Lduc, West Jordan, will direct legislative forum. Debate competition is being handled by Howard Davis and Jill Johnson, Riverton; John Peterson, West Jordan; Jackie Riddle, Cedar City; and Christy Larson, Payson. Karla Adams, Cedar City and Crystal Cook, Riverton, are in charge of registration procedures. "In a tournament of this magnitude, solutions must be found to the problems associated with dealing with such a large number of contestants," Smith said.
