Show T-birds romp to Victory over Mustangs tackle and raced for the end zone. Bills booted the extra point and the T-Birds held a 27-3 lead at the intermission. The third quarter was no better for the visiting Mustangs as they fumbled the opening kick on their own 8 and Anderson on the first play from scrimmage sweep to the right for another T-Bird score. Bills added the extra point with just five seconds ticked off the clock. Late in the period the Mustangs on their own 29 went for a first down on a fourth and one and were stopped cold by the T-Bird defense which set up the final score of the day for SUSC. It was five plays later that Burns on a keeper found himself trapped and shuffled the ball off to Anderson who scooted around the end for an eight yard scoring play capping the 29 yard drive. Bills again added the extra point. Only other score of the game came late in the fourth period when the Mustangs picked off a Bob August pass on the T-Bird 22. A pass interference call moved the ball to the one and Dave McAtee pulled over the middle for a TD with just 3:06 left in the game. Utilizing the wind to good advantage in both the second and third quarters the Southern Utah State Thunderbirds boosted their conference record to 4-2 and their over-all record to 5-3 with a 41-10 romping of Western New Mexico Saturday afternoon. Despite the cold the homecoming fans at SUSC were treated to a big victory by Coach Tom Kingsford and his T-Birds as they dominated the visitors from Silver City, N.M. dropping them to 2-4 in the RMAC standings. On the second series of plays the SUSC squad took command of the game marching 72 yards in 10 plays for the first touchdown of the game. Scott Burns carried from the three for the score. The entire drive was on the ground with Phil Howa picking up 24 yards; Winfred Anderson 32 yards and Mike Powell 20 yards in the series. Doug Bills booted the extra point. Taking advantage of the wind in the first quarter the Mustangs got possession on the T-Bird 45 on an exchange of punts and moved for their only first down of the period to the 32. Bogged down Robbie Birch booted a 49 yard field goal to move the score to 7-3 for SUSC. With the wind to their backs the T-Birds domianted the second and third quarters with three TD's in the second period and two more in the third quarter. Early in the second period SUSC marched 68 yards for a TD on three plays with Burns hitting Ben Dodson on a screen pass in the flat and he scooted 62 yards for the score. The Point after was missed. Five minutes later the T-Birds T-Birds were again on the score board this time on a 62 yard march capped with a Burns to Dodson pass good for 24 yards. Joe Wells booted the extra point. SUSC took possession after a two yard punt into the wind by the visiting Mustangs. Another short punt, a 12 yarder gave the T-Birds possession again on the Mustang 35 and on the next play Burns found Rich Hernandez free on the sideline and he broke one |
