This whole so-called 'Panama Canal Treaty' affair looks more and more like a super-professional con artist trick that makes Ho'bert. Redford's and Paul Newman's version of 'The Sting' look like a Halloween prank. If you are not blinded by the 'Eastern Establishment's' controlled media blitz then write to your congressmen and protest. Senator Jake Garn; Senator Orrin Hatch. Rep. Gunn McKay and Rep. Dan Marriott, Washington, I). C. 20013. SilHTft'lv It. (i. Eastman I5 Til Kaiianaville, llah HI712 Editor: I have read with continuing concern Carl Palmer's ongoing harangue about alleged misconduct among prominent members of our community and our local power company. His array of half truths and deliverate mistruths suggest that his ; supposed in-depth investigation has been superficial at best. It becomes in-i in-i creasingly eVidOnrto rile, ai ram sure it must to others of our community, that Carl Palmer's goal is not cheaper power for Cedar City, but rather a deliverate attempt at-tempt to set the people of our community at odds against one another. His efforts are clearly emerging as one giving vent to a long standing grudge. Does Cedar City really need the services of a professional character assasin? How long do we let Carl Palmer lead us by the nose? Already $1,200 has been squandered for a menaingless poll. Do we want to spend another $50,000 to confirm what our own local pwoer board already knows but has failed to fully make public? The recent Carl Isvog TV program clearly reflects Carl Palmer's one sided view of the Cedar City situation. Only those who agree with Mr. Palmer's ideology were shown on the program. There were others interviewed who expressed ex-pressed opinions contrary to those of Mr. Palmer. None of them were included in his program. Holly Milne Editor: (Why we should elect Jones for another term.) Water is our big problem, especially f culinary water. One of our main sources for our culinary water is Cedar Mountain. Kerry knows our Cedar Mountain, and each individual spring, he knows what each spring has done, and what they will do. He knows the valley, and all the wells, both city and private wells. He knows all about farming and all about irrigation, this he has learned by the use of a shovel. He knows the livestock business in all phases. He is a proven successful business man. He is a native of the city, and knows the city from beginning to end, this he has learned from his father, and grandfather. If you want to know what the Jones family have done, toward making this a city; get the book, the Lehi Jones book 'Kerry's grandfather), you will find it very interesting. It will show you what the Jones family have done in agriculture of all phases, also the cattle raising. We are right in the middle of our sewer system, which runs into nearly one million dollars. Kerry knows just what has been done, and what still has to be done. Kerry has the knowledge, and personality to meet the dignitaries of both State and National level. It would be impossible for a stranger to take the duties of Mayor, not knowing the details at this time, no matter how good he was I appeal to the Citizens of Cedar City, who helped build the city, to what it is today. And p- out and elect Jones for Mayor! I lias U. IHh Friends, This is John Beal. I have been a citizen of Cedar City for 50 years and I feel I owe our community a debt of gratitude for the opportunity I have had to live here. It is a fine place to live with wonderful people.. .and, we are all definitely in trouble. As most of you know, I have been a life long Republican, having served two terms as county chairman and in the Utah Senate. We have an issue before us that must be resolved and it should be resolved on election day. It is my intention to vote AGAINST the present city administration. They have failed us as have past administrations ad-ministrations by completely avoiding the most pertinent and relevant issue of the last thirty years. The issue of low cost municipal power. In fact, our city fathers have put every obstacle possible in the way of securing such power or for that matter, of even discussing it. It has cost us all millions of dollars, dollars which have left our community, never to return. An elected official has a sacred and moral obligation to be sensitive to the needs and growth of the people. However, the people of Cedar City have been ignored and abused. WHY doesn't Cedar City have an inexpensive municipal power system? WHY, when power was available and allocated to the city, did past mayors and city councils refuse to do anything about it? WHY was the request for a referrendum vote on municpal power ignored numerous times by the mayors and city council? WHY? WHY wasn't an attempt ever made by the mayors and city council to negotiate lower power costs? - I would feel better if it was just ignorance, but we all know better than that! Was it for power? Maybe! Was it greed? Perhaps! Was it because these officials were in fact elected by the power company? (for twenty pieces of silver) WHY? WHY would intelligent, reasonable men flagrantly impose upon the people of our community such excessive power rates? Knowingly they have made no effort to keep rates down nor to fight higher ones. This definitely will reflect upon the well being and welfare of all our families. Consider the plight of the young and the old. Young people will literally be forced out.. ..who can pay such exorbinent power rates while raising a small family, building a home, and getting established? Old people, on fixed incomes, are spending as much as one-fifth of their monthly income just for power, this deprives them of many badly needed material necessities and a dignity they have earned, one that we should be insuring in-suring for them. Not only do we pay our own power bill, but through taxes we pay for the excessive cost of power for our schools, our hospital, our city offices, our court house and all public buildings. Businessmen in Cedar City have excessive costs for power, factories suffer, farmers suffer. In fact friends, tell me anyone who doesn't. For years the power company has taken over the Republican party to insure a city government symphatic to their own views and best interests They have been running run-ning us! iy have been ruining us! I would fet: lax in my duty to our community and to ;s fine people if I didn't fight this organization that has caused so much trouble, past and present. Alone I can't do much, nor can you; but together WE can do a lot. Fortunately our laws provide for us a means to deal with such gross, wonton injustices. There is one thing to do now. ...VOTE OUT the present city government. As a last observation, did you know that the city council taxes us for the power we use? This to me adds insult to injury! Citizens of Cedar City, its time to ACT instead of REACT' Dr. John Beal Dear Editor: There is much controversory right now of one person running for a public office in our forthcoming election - Jack Sawyers for Mayor! Thank you Jack for having the "guts" to choose to run when no one in the Democrat Party came forth and even desired to represent their party. Our system is founded on two parties and should never have a public position up for election with one person running unopposed who will automatically get into that office. What is wrong with our community that there aren't a few more "Jack Sawyers's" who would put themselves them-selves on the line and say he would run to keep our process of government in running order? My hat is off to you Jack for taking a stand! Win or lose, you tried and changed our bogged down system of much too long in this area. I hope by the time another election comes along and other offices are to be' filled there will be other Jack Sawyers 1 ; who will put forth some effort and perhaps run for a public office and again win or lose, say they have filled their God given right as a citizen of this community, of this state, and of this country! Name withheld by request Editor: Why does Carl Palmer pretend that a municipal power system would lower power rates? He knows, as does everyone else, that all it would do is raise taxes, but he apparently doesn't care about that. He also knows that his witch-hunt into the past will not change present power rates. Why, then, is he beating his breast and spewing his noxious fumes over Cedar City in an attempt to change not the power rates, but the form of ownership of the power system? Two books which are published by Washington, D. C. based organizations may shed some light on the situation. One book, The Cities' Wealth, praises the activities of the Berkeley (Calif.) Coalition. The Coalition describes itself as "a movement of radicals, minorities, students and Liberal Democrats working together for popular control of the local economy." This book goes on to say that it "focuses on the techniques of economic and political policy which lead toward controlling and reallocating a city's wealth." The first priority of the Berkeley Coalition is "city ownership of the private electric utility" because "community-owned "community-owned utilities. ..serve as the point of entry for broad public ownership of productive enterprise." This book was written to serve as an instruction book for those who want to bring socialism to their town. The other book, published by the Environmental En-vironmental Action Foundation, is also a "how-to- book for those who want to socialize their private power company. It is complete with cartoons of Reddy Kilowatt oppressing the consumer, similar to that which Mr. Palmer included in his newspaper advertisement. This book recommends other organizations from which help in socializing a private power company can be obtained One of these organizations is the American Public Power Association. Isn't it interesting in-teresting that at Mr. Palmer's public meeting on March 18 he distributed very expensive literature published by this same organization'' The nation-w ide Washington. D C. based movement to destroy private enterprise power systems and promote socialism has bred strange Ix-dfellows Radical Environmentalists. En-vironmentalists.
