Show Iron Mines cutback workers Nearly 20 percent of the work force at the Cedar City Operations of Utah International, Inc. will be laid off at the conclusion of the current work week, it is announced by York Jones, manager. Currently Utah International has a work force of approximately 200 and it is anticipated about 40 men will be laid off at the end of this week owing to a reduction of delivery of iron ore to Colorado Fuel and Iron Steel Corp at Pueblo, Colo. "We were notified by officials of CF&I this week to discontinue shipment ship-ment of ore for the next two months," Jones reported. Approximately half of the ore mined by Utah International is shipped to CF&I at Pueblo, and comes from the Comstock Mine, he said. "Although we have not had an opportunity op-portunity to completely evaluate the effect on our operations we know that we will have to reduce our force by about 40 this week and possibly more in the next several weeks," Jones indicated. in-dicated. At the present time Utah International In-ternational is anticipating that Colorado Fuel will resume their demands for ore sometime in January. A specific date has not been indicated by CF&I officials. Officials at the Pueblo office stated the discontinuation of ore shipment is owing to the lack of sales of products from the Pueblo plant, Jones stated. The Comstock holdings are owned by CF&I and Utah International, Inc. is under contract to mine, process and ship ore for that organization for use at the Pueblo steel fabrication plant, Jones said. |
